About Old Hickory Lake

More than 22,000 acres of water, recreation, and Tennessee history.

Old Hickory Lake is a reservoir on the Cumberland River, approximately 25 miles upstream from Nashville. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Old Hickory Lock and Dam between January 1952 and June 1954 and continues to operate the facilities.

The lake spans approximately 22,500 acres and 97.3 river miles across Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale, and Smith counties. Its public facilities include 41 boat access sites, two Corps-operated campgrounds, seven large public marinas, one sailboat marina, and three private marinas.

Fishing, boating, jet skiing, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming make Old Hickory one of Middle Tennessee’s most active outdoor destinations.

The Rubright family

We live, work, and play in the same places as our customers.

Rubright Marinas was formed in 2017 when Jim and Nate Rubright acquired Gallatin Marina. Ben Rubright joined as an owner when the family acquired Peninsula Marina. The family later added Barren River State Dock and Marina before purchasing The Boathouse at Benders Ferry in October 2020.

Customer satisfaction is the family’s highest priority. Safety and wellbeing are measured against the standards they expect for their own children, creating marinas where families can feel comfortable and have fun together.

The Boathouse at Benders Ferry, from the ground up

The Boathouse occupies 3 1/2 acres along Old Hickory Lake’s south shore, in the Benders Ferry area of Mount Juliet. Roof and Rack, Inc., a builder of marine storage facilities, designed and built the structure. Its placement keeps a band of trees between the water and the building, so from the lake you see woods rather than a wall of metal siding.

Inside, enclosed racks take 236 boats of up to 32 feet, with 50 more spaces kept for personal watercraft. Boats travel between rack and water on a 20,000-pound lift.

Our neighbors on the shore

Our neighbors are the Lone Branch Public Access Area on one side and Cedar Creek Yacht Club on the other. Anyone boating on this part of the lake will recognize the spot from the water.

Mount Juliet TN and Wilson County

Mount Juliet TN is in Wilson County, on the eastern edge of the Nashville area, and the city has grown quickly over the past two decades. Lebanon TN, the county seat, is a straight drive east. Hermitage TN and Donelson sit just to the west across the county line. For people in all of those places, The Boathouse is a way to own a boat on Old Hickory without towing it to a ramp.

Wilson County TN and the south shore

The south shore of the lake forms much of the northern edge of Wilson County TN. Creeks and coves cut into it, which gives this end of the lake a different feel from the broad water nearer the dam.

Old Hickory Dam and the lake it created

Old Hickory Lake exists because the Cumberland River was dammed at Old Hickory in the early 1950s, a Corps of Engineers project completed in 1954. The Corps runs the lock and dam to this day. The lake covers about 22,500 acres and almost a hundred river miles, touching Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale and Smith counties. Old Hickory Dam lies downstream to the west of us, and its lock lets boats pass to the river below.

Dozens of public launch sites and a couple of Corps campgrounds line the shoreline, along with several marinas. People come to fish, cruise, ride jet skis, sail, paddle, kayak and swim.

How the Rubright family came to Benders Ferry

Rubright Marinas began in 2017, when Jim and Nate Rubright bought Gallatin Marina. Ben Rubright became an owner when the family took on Peninsula Marina, and the State Dock on Barren River Lake followed. The family completed its purchase of the Benders Ferry facility in October 2020.

The family puts customer satisfaction first and judges safety by the standard they would want for their own children. Day to day, that means ongoing repairs and upgrades, a team that is trained and backed up, and open lines for feedback. If something is not right, tell the staff or phone 615-758-2999.

What makes Benders Ferry different

Most marinas on the lake are built around wet slips. Benders Ferry is built around a single enclosed storage building and a crew that handles every launch. That shapes the whole experience. Owners do not walk a long dock to find their boat; the boat comes to them. Fuel is added during preparation rather than at a pump queue. And because boats are stored dry, there is no hull scrubbing at the end of the season.

To see how storage works in practice, read about our indoor boat storage or the dry stack services we offer.

A growing part of Middle Tennessee

As Mount Juliet has grown, so has interest in keeping a boat close to home. Enclosed storage on the south shore means owners on this side of the lake have an option that does not involve a long drive or a trailer.
